Over the past decade, considerable effort has focused on the synthesis of new organic π-conjugated systems for optoelectronic applications such as organic photovoltaic cells (OPVs), organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) and organic field effect transistors (OFETs). Explorations of related materials featuring main group elements are well under way. In particular, materials which based on heterocyclopentadiene rings, such as thiophenes, pyrroles, and phospholes are fairly well developed. Organophosphorus compounds, in particular σ3,λ3-phospholes, have proved very interesting since they possess a phosphorus lone pair of electrons, thus allowing further reactivity. Chemical modification of the P atom by oxidation, alkylation, or coordination by Lewis acids and metals has led to tunable new π-conjugated systems with diverse photophysical properties. 1H-1,3-Benzazaphosphole (BAP) derivatives have been known since many years but, no photophysical studies have been reported so far. The discovery of their luminescence properties could help to improve the performance of organophosphorus-containing devices, as these BAP compounds are more stable in air than their 1H-1,3-Benzoxaphosphole (BOP) analogues. In this work, we focused on the development of new emitters based on BAP rings. The modification of the 2-substituent leds to change the absorption and emission properties. The physical properties of these BAP compounds make them valuable building blocks for the development of new materials in optoelectronics.
