Many bimetallic complexes are known to display reactivity divergent from that of their analogous monometallic counterparts owing to cooperativity between the metal centers. When two transition metals are ligated by a tris(phosphinoamide) ligand scaffold, metal-metal bonds have been shown to form. Iron and cobalt have been installed in this framework, and the synthesis and characterization of both homo- and heterobimetallic complexes will be discussed. By varying the late metal combinations, trends involving coordination environment and geometry, electronic structure, and bonding have been probed. In particular, the extent of metal-metal bonding, which is affected by the identity of the metal centers, dictates the capacity of reactivity in these complexes. Comparisons between analogous late metal bimetallics will be highlighted, and the effects of structural and electronic differences will be discussed.
