A library of heterotrimetallic complexes, [M[SNS]2{Ni(dppe)}2] ([SNS] = bis(2-mercapto-p-tolyl)amine; dppe = bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane), has been synthesized incorporating a redox-active M[SNS]2 metalloligand (M = Mo, W, V). The oxidation states of both the metalloligand, as well as the terminal nickel centers, impact the properties of the complexes, including the presence of metal-metal bonds. The redox-active nature of these trimetallic systems allowed for the isolation of mixed-valent systems. By spectroscopic and structural measurements, the complexes demonstrated localized behavior, despite a metal-metal bond communication network.
