“Quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged, and safe” (QuEChERS) methods are increasingly used for pesticide extraction from food due to their simplicity and effectiveness. With such attributes, QuEChERS is also becoming more popular for extracting pesticides from animal tissue. We have developed a method using QuEChERS and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry for atrazine (ATR) determination in muscle and hepatopancreas tissue of the virile crayfish, <i>Orconectes virilis</i>. The method includes the addition of a stable-isotope internal standard, deuterated atrazine (ATR-d5), to improve the accuracy and precision of the ATR quantitation. Figures of merit including the detection limit, the limit of quantitation, and the dynamic range were determined. Additionally, a spike recovery test of ATR was performed. The method will be used to quantitate ATR, its metabolites, and other pesticides that may accumulate in the tissue. The level of pesticide accumulation in the tissue will be correlated with physiological and behavioral changes in the crayfish.
