The Chemistry Club at Centenary College of Louisiana is a student-led organization that strives to disseminate chemistry related knowledge to the public in fun and engaging ways. Many of our most popular projects occur during National Chemistry Week, such as the Dippin’ Dots demonstration and the Periodic Table of Cupcakes display. We also collaborate with our school’s physics department to put on the Chemistry and Physics circus every year for prospective and current students of the college. Possibly the most impactful project that we work on involves a collaboration with the local American Chemical Society section, which sponsors an outreach program each year during National Chemistry Week. The event, which involves hands-on activities and demonstrations based on the NCW theme, was typically held at our science museum for local school children in the region. Due to the temporary closure of the museum this year, the event is taking place at a local mall so we will gain experience in helping participants of many different ages learn some geology and chemistry. We plan to screen a movie about Percy Julian at our art house cinema in February and, of course, attend the National ACS Meeting in March. In the future, we plan to grow by participating in more community based and on campus project to further our goal of spreading basic chemistry knowledge to the general public.
