Over the last decade, applications in fields as diverse as synthetic, catalytic, polymer, and materials chemistry have provoked increased attention to the organometallic chemistry of the heavy alkaline earth metals.  While remarkable progress has been made toward the optimization of synthetic pathways and the exploration of alternative routes to overcome various synthetic challenges towards these compounds, significant restrictions and limitations remain. <br/><br/>As an environmentally friendly alternative to the classical mercurial based redox transmetallation protolysis, we explored triarylbismuth as a redox transmetallating agent for easy access to the alkaline earth metal species.  This talk will highlight mechanistic studies, over several years, that finally lead to a robust, one-pot access to these desired compounds.<br/>
