The deep eutectic material comprised of choline geranate and geranic acid has been demonstrated to break down pathogenic biofilms and reduce viability of bacterial cultures. However, how the different components of the deep eutectic contribute to its efficacy is unknown. In order to investigate the mechanism of action, analogs to the choline geranate material have been developed and tested against planktonic and biofilm-encapsulated bacteria to help elucidate the mechanism of how the ionic liquids and deep eutectic components are impacting the pathogenic cultures.
