Volatile methyl siloxane (VMS) compounds result from the breakdown of silicone polymers in landfills. The presence of these VMS in biogas streams lead to mechanical problems as they form silicon dioxide (sand) when combusted. The majority of VMS removal technologies rely on physical removal through adsorption, but there is experimental evidence for reactive chemisorption of hexamethylcyclotrisiloxane (D3) on γ-Al2O3 surfaces. Density functional theory results for adsorption energies of VMS on (100) γ-Al2O3 surface are presented, as well as investigation of the reaction mechanism of surface-catalyzed VMS hydrolysis. Results for hexamethyldisiloxane (L2) indicate that VMS weakly adsorb to the γ-Al2O3 (100) surface.
