As sustainability and green chemistry become integrated into modern chemical education, outreach ought to reflect these essential ideas. Through the Early Career Undergraduate Research Experience (eCURe) at Pasadena City College, sustainability education and outreach has been a fundamental component of our program. By introducing our students to the science of sustainability, highlighting planetary boundaries and issues regarding energy and the environment, and developing outreach activities to teach middle school and high school students about sustainability and green chemistry, we have already made a significant impact in the community.<br/>Sustainability education and outreach is an opportunity to promote diversity in the STEM workforce. Outreach to underrepresented populations has stimulated interest in sustainability and careers in which STEM degrees can be applied to ‘green’ urban areas and make individuals aware of how their choices can impact the environment.
