Smoke from one cigarette can cause the delay of seed germination in many plants<br/>species. The smoke can inhibit the production of microorganisms, which are needed for plant growth. Ethylene in the smoke causes lateral swelling in the plant which leads to a condition known as epinasty, where the plant grows outwardly or downwardly. The effects of toxins and carcinogens in cigarette smoke on an English Ivy plant were studied.<br/>2-Butanone was identified in the exposed plants through gas chromatography and mass spectrometry, as well as other VOC’s. The experimental design and preliminary results will be highlighted in the presentation.
