The theory and application of 1H- and 13C-NMR spectroscopy are widely used in the teaching of NMR spectroscopy in organic chemistry labs. Although less common, 19F-NMR spectra are both beautiful and interestingly complex for students. Given the high natural abundance and the robust gyromagnetic ratio of 19F, it is as easy to obtain 19F spectra as it is to obtain 1H spectra. This presentation focuses on the ease of obtaining 19F spectra on both low field (60 MHz) and high field (300 MHz) spectrometers. Several examples from teaching and research will be discussed. Given the importance of fluorine in medicinal and agricultural chemistry, and the increasing availability of a wide array of fluorinated compounds, we suggest that the use of 19F-NMR spectra should be added to the NMR spectroscopy teaching repertoire.
