The properties and reactivities of multimetallic compounds has attracted considerable attention as these compounds serve as potential models for metal cofactors and active sites on heterogeneous catalysts. Germane to this presentation are studies on rationally designed multi-iron compounds as models to elucidate the reactivity of the iron molybdenum cofactor and its role in nitrogen fixation. Reactions of dinitrogen and its analogs with our previously reported tri-cobalt tri(µ-hydride) complex housed in our tris(β-diketiminate) cyclophanate ligand have been surveyed and their relationship to dinitrogen reduction will be presented. In addition, some of our ongoing synthetic approaches to tuning our cyclophane ligand to control reactivity and modulate cluster size will be presented.
