Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) typically crystallize as insoluble, unprocessable powders, making their applications appear limited. However, it has been demonstrated that when COFs are pressed into shaped objects with unidirectional mechanical force, they exhibit crystallographic alignment related to preferred orientation. The pores of two-dimensional frameworks create one dimensional channels when the sheets of the COF stack, through which lithium ions can migrate. We hypothesized that by incorporating various oligo-ethylene oxide (OEO) chains into the organic monomers of COFs the lithium-ion conductivity will increase as a result of enhanced interactions between the COF, the OEO and the lithium ions. Ion conducting COFs can provide a platform for the development of all-solid-state  batteries, where the liquid electrolyte has been replaced by a COF.
