This paper will review the structure of mathematical reasoning as it relates to the concept of variable, constants, expressions, and equations. This review will then be applied to questions of the reasoning in chemistry about quantity--and in particular the relationships among quantities that arise as a result of specific logical relationships among different units. How this is used within chemistry teaching, in particular with data and examples drawn from twenty five years of integration of mathematical reasoning in to chemistry, will be presented.
