Lignin is a complex biological polymer that must be decomposed to produce white paper. Enzymes produced by white-rot fungus <i>P</i>. <i>chrysosporium, </i>which selectively decomposes lignin, have been a source of inspiration for coordination compounds to oxidize lignin. One such coordination compound is Fe-dpaq where dpaq-H is the ligand 2-[bis(pyridine-2-ylmethyl)]amino-N-quinolin-8-yl-acetamide. Using high performance liquid chromatography, the rate of oxidation of veratryl alcohol, a lignin model compound, into veratraldehyde with Fe-dpaq acting as a catalyst was studied. In order to evaluate the specificity of Fe-dpaq as a catalyst for this reaction, the other products in addition to veratraldehyde that are were produced must be identified. An overview of kinetic and product analysis data will be reported.
