In previous work, the formation of a novel “pale yellow” solution intermediate has been observed during the synthesis of silver nanoparticles. The latter, previously referred as Ag(OH)2-, has also been observed by dissolving silver oxide in water or silver ions in an alkali solution. However, there is a void in the literature on the synthesis or characterization of this ion complex. This work attempts to explain and corroborate the formation of this innovative ion complex through both experimental and computational chemistry. Optimization of reaction conditions, as well as spectroscopic and electrochemical methodologies are presented to support the presence of Ag(OH)2-. Furthermore, density functional theory (DFT) will be employed to elucidate the structural, electronic, and spectroscopic fingerprints of various Ag-OH complexes. Geometry optimizations of both the ground and 1st-excited states of the complexes will be conducted in order to obtain thermodynamic and vibrational properties, thereby verifying that the system occupies an energy minimum on the potential energy surface. Both energetic and spectral signatures will assist the identification of the Ag(OH)2- species.
