Through recent discoveries, it has been determined that there are increased levels of the aggregated form of the protein tau in patients with Alzheimer’s disease (AD) when compared to healthy patient levels. This has led to the exploration of compounds that inhibit the self-aggregating properties of tau as potential treatments for AD. Flavonoids, naturally occurring dietary compounds, have a variety of pharmacological activities, including anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and tau aggregation reduction properties. Furthermore, recent studies show that rhodanine structures exhibit strong inhibitory properties for the tau protein. Through rational drug design, a promising novel compound consisting of both the flavonoid backbone and rhodanine was proposed. The novel compound was synthesized, characterized, and will be tested for its ability to protect against Alzheimer’s disease.
