Sensing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is important for numerous applications, including environmental monitoring of pollutants in water.  Upon interaction with VOCs, metalloporphyrins exhibit a colorimetric response, and the addition of cholesteric substituents to the metalloporphyrins combine the responsiveness of liquid crystals to external stimuli and the rich optoelectronic properties of porphyrins. In this study, we have utilized palladium-mediated coupling to synthesize liquid crystalline porphyrins and tested their efficacy as VOC sensors.
