We present the development of a laboratory exercise for the physical chemistry curriculum which involves the study of thermo-solvatochromism.  Students measure steady-state absorption spectra of Reichardt’s dye at several temperatures.  We are also investigating the possibility of measuring the fluorescence shifts of solvatofluorchromic dyes with temperature as well.  This exercise teaches students about the role of solvent dynamics in photo-induced intramolecular electron transfer processes.
