The Oconee River, spanning from north to central Georgia, was analyzed by a Georgia College & State University undergraduate to monitor the nutrient levels, temperature, pH, conductivity, and turbidity using HACH on-site testing kits. Testing was done during the winter months in order to obtain more accurate results and EPA protocols were followed to ensure proper sampling of the surface water. The sampling locations were mapped using Global Positioning Systems to guarantee that future studies are taken at the same locations. Volatile organic compounds were analyzed using gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy coupled with a purge-n-trap autosampler and concentrator. The river was tested every five miles in order to determine the environmental impacts of surrounding rural farmlands and pastures. This presentation summarizes the techniques and results of this year-long project.
