Our research concerns developing an organic synthesis reaction for a site-specific drug delivery compound. Using a site-specific method allows for a lower dosage of the drug to be used, which lowers costs, toxicity, and harmful side effects. The compounds synthesized through this research have a photo-active naphthalimide core, a tail, a multi-part linker, and a drug. The tail influences solubility within the synthesis reactions and within the human body, after injection. The linker binds the drug to tissues within the human body and controls the rate of release of the drug. The compound would be injected into an artery through a proprietary delivery system involving a cannula and light fiber. The light interacts with the photo-active naphthalimide core to activate the linker, binding the linker and drug to the tissues in the area. Hydrolysis reaction between the linker and the drug then releases the drug into the body. The research presented here describes the synthetic rationale and progress to date toward completing the compound.
