Schiff base (SB) ligands or imines are frequently used in the coordination chemistry of metal complexes due to their significant advantages over other ligands, for example, they are easily synthesized and purified, and they can form very stable bonds with transition metals. In addition, the spectroscopy, electrochemical and magnetic properties of the metallic complexes can be fine tuned modifying the Schiff base moiety. Our group has recently been working on the synthesis of metal complexes with interesting electrochemical and magnetic properties. Recently, we have synthesized and characterized new mononuclear complexes of Cu(II), Co (II), Ni(II), Mn(III) and the Schiff base L with the aim to use them as building blocks for the synthesis of single molecule magnets and other types of nanomagnetic materials. Single molecular magnets (SMM) are molecules that exhibit a slow relaxation of their magnetization in the absence of an applied magnetic field. Materials that exhibit SMM behavior are of interest in materials science since as they can be used as molecular switches1 or as high density memory devices2 With this in mind, we present the synthesis and characterization of two new pentanuclear complexes, which we formulated as [(MnL)4M(CN)6]ClO4, M = Fe, Cr. In this work, the synthesis, crystal structure, spectroscopic characterization, electrochemical properties and electronic structure of these complexes will be discussed.
