The Materials Genome Initiative (MGI) started five years ago with the ambitious goal of decreasing the time and cost of discovering and deploying new materials by a factor of two through a new paradigm of materials-by-design. Materials-by-design aimed to describe an approach to developing new materials that takes advantage of advanced computing, modern data and informatics tools, and an increased access to and availability of materials data for the community. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) took a leadership role to support the new infrastructure needed to realize this vision through the development of standards, tools and techniques enabling acquisition, representation, and discovery of materials data; interoperability of computer simulations of materials phenomena across multiple length and time scales; and the quality assessment of materials data, models, and simulations. NIST works closely with stakeholders in industry, academia, and government to enable this approach to a wide-range of materials systems including soft materials and polymers. In this talk, the progress that has been made in the MGI will be highlighted with examples drawn from a) the use of powerful, general-use tools for data curation, management, and discovery, b) computational approaches to provide confidence in simulation data and output, and c) accelerated development of advanced materials in specific use-cases such as block copolymer self-assembly and 2D electronic materials. In addition, opportunities and challenges for the future to further accelerate materials discovery will be offered including the role of emerging capabilities in machine learning, data mining, and other advanced computing algorithms.
