What is sustainable chemistry? How do chemical manufacturers, pharmaceutical companies, and makers of personal care and cleaning products assess the sustainability of their chemical processes and products? What environmental and health factors do such companies consider most important to assess and optimize? What are the drivers toward improvement? How do stakeholders including the federal government, industry, and others contribute to the development and implementation of more sustainable chemistry technologies? What barriers or challenges are hindering progress? For its recent technology assessment report to Congress titled <i>Chemical Innovation: Technologies to Make Processes and Products More Sustainable</i>, the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) convened a two-day meeting of 24 experts, conducted more than 80 stakeholder interviews, and fielded a detailed survey of chemical companies. The results, presented through the lens of the product life cycle, indicate encouraging progress and point to opportunities to further advance this field.
