Two dimensional (2D) materials have attracted intense interest because of their structural anisotropy, nearly 100% active sties, and unique surface electronic structures. Recently, we developed an efficient microwave strategy in synthesizing ultrathin CdS nanosheets with thickness around 1 nm. Decorated with a variety of 1st-row transition metals on the 2D CdS nanosheets, the resulting M/CdS composites exhibit excellent photocatalytic performance towards alcohol oxidation which result in aldehydes or ketones under visible light irradiation in aqueous media. In addition, these alcohol substrates can simultaneously act as proton sources for the production of H2. The overall activities of M/CdS photocatalysts will be systematically compared and the reaction mechanisms will be proposed and discussed in this presentation.
