The present study provides mechanistic insights into controlling the back electron transfer [BET] processes between donor {N,N-dimethylaniline [DMA] and N,N-diethylaniline [DEA]} and acceptor {an extended π-conjugated derivative of pyrene viz. (E)-4-(2-(pyren-1-yl) vinyl) benzonitrile [PyCN]} systems in methylcyclohexane. The results suggest that designing completely conjugated molecules with an inherent “push-pull” effect is an efficient strategy for reducing the rate of back electron transfer [BET], thereby generating long-lived charged states in the electronically excited states. It has been observed that the rate constants of back electron transfer (kBET) for the PyCN-DMA and PyCN-DEA are ~ 2x105 s-1 and 1.3x105 s-1 respectively which are ~3 orders of magnitude slower compared to control systems viz. pyrene-DMA and pyrene-DEA [&gt;1.25x108 s-1]. The obtained results have been analyzed based on the driving force dependence for the forward [△GPET] and back electron transfer [△GBET] processes.The details of the work will be presented.
