This presentation describes the shape-controllable synthesis, formation mechanisms, and characteristic measurements of Y2O3:Eu3+ nanosheets. The Y2O3:Eu3+ nanomaterials were obtained with a low-cost, large-scale, solution-based hydrothermal method followed by a thermal annealing process. The morphology of the Y2O3:Eu3+ nanomaterials was controlled by tuning the time, temperature, and the pH of the suspension. The optical properties of the Y2O3:Eu3+ nanosheets and nanotubes were compared with that of the bulk materials to understand and improve the functionality of these materials. Synchrotron X-ray diffraction patterns, field emission scanning electron microscopy images, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy images, emission spectra, excitation spectra, and fluorescence decay curves were measured and compared. The results showed that Y2O3:Eu3+ nanosheets contain a novel Eu3+ environment, leading to their markedly lower fluorescence decay lifetimes.
