Ladder-type conjugated polymers represent a unique subset of macromolecules. Their rigid structural consititution provides intriguing optical, mechanical and electronic properties. However, it is still an elusive task to conduct precise synthesis and characterization on the ladder-type conjugated polymers. In our study, ladder-type conjugated polymers were synthesized using a post-polymerization functionalization strategy.<sup>2</sup>A highly efficient borylation was utilized to bridge building units and lock the conformation of conjugated polymers through strong coordinate bonds. The reactivity of the ring-closing step and the structural defect of these ladder-type polymers can be determined by <sup>19</sup>F NMR. The formation of intramolecular coordinate bonds and the rigid backbone were unambiguously characterized by the single crystal structures of small molecules with a similar structural consitution. This small molecule showed deep-red absorption and strong solid-state emission. The optical properties and the solid-state packing behavior of these novel ladder-type polymers were studied in detail.
