The Morris group has been focused on the exploration of metal organic frameworks for artificial photosynthetic chemistry. This includes work on elucidating energy transfer mechanisms, exploring charge transport mechanisms, and the development of water oxidation and carbon dioxide catalysts. Indeed, we have explored energy transfer in ruthenium polypyridyl complex-doped metal organic frameworks, demonstrated redox hopping charge transport in porphrynic and ruthenium polypyridyl - based MOFs, and demonstrated catalysis in a variety of structures including VPI-100, a cyclam-containing MOF. While our published studies have focused on MOFs with independent, single-function structures. The ultimate goal is to combine these functionalities in layer-by-layer or core-shell like structures. This talk will focus on introduce our foundational studies in energy transfer and catalysis and discuss our motivations and attempts to couple light-absorption to catalysis. The ability to couple the advantageous properties of MOFs for energy transfer with the catalytic enhancement observed with MOFs in an optimized fashion represents a clear, “What is next?” challenge.
