The ever-growing energy storage requirements for transport electrification and smart grid have simulated the intensive research into high-efficiency electrochemical energy storage (EES) technologies. A quick literatures and patents search reveals the rapid improvements in this field is to a large extent boosted by the innovation in carbon materials, such as carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and graphene. However, these carbons never came with low price tag, which greatly limits the large scale application of the related innovations. We fabricate sustainable nanocarbons (sus-nanocarbons) from agriculture and forest bio-resources largely available in North America and develop serials of high performance electrode materials to meet the requirements of EES industry. With comparable performances at a fraction of cost of CNTs and graphene in some applications, the sus-nanocarbons can enable numerous industrial level applications of the innovations, which are well discovered already but simply not feasible due to the high cost of conventional nanocarbons.
