Perfluorocarboxylic acids (PFCAs) have been extensively used in a diverse scope of applications and have caused worldwide contamination of aquatic environments. PFCAs are highly recalcitrant and persistent in the environment and living organisms, owing to the extremely stable C-F bonds. To address this global challenge, we have investigated the defluorination of PFCAs by UV-excited hydrated electrons. Reaction mechanisms are probed with a suite of instrumental characterizations and theoretical calculations. This work highlights the application potential of photon-excited hydrated electrons for the degradation of PFCAs for water treatment and environmental remediation.
