Recycling methods have progressed throughout the years within chemistry research. Specifically with precious metals, catalytic systems are a serious consideration because of the limited quantity and high expense associated with them. The objective of this research is to make a successful catalyst that goes hand in hand with the twelve principles of green chemistry. In order to do this, close analysis of different syntheses were taken into consideration. The Suzuki coupling mechanism was used because of the simplicity of using water and the formation of the reaction in room temperature, which does not promote harm to the environment. Additionally the transmetalation agent, a boronic acid, it less toxic than tin counterparts used for other coupling reactions. The use of a biomimetic approach to synthesize nanocatalysts also meets green chemistry objectives, where the M6A peptide (binds Fe3O4) and the Pd4 (binds Pd) were used to mediate the formation of the nanoparticles. The magnetite particles will be bound to the precious metal to help to form a magnetized solution where the Pd can easily be extracted using a magnet. This helps in the reduction of waste since the magnetic particles allow the active Pd catalyst to be recycled. The use of M6A and Pd4 peptides over other ligands help the synthesis by being able to control the shape and size of the catalyst being produced. This results in a high surface area-to-volume ratio of the catalyst, which will help yield a faster reaction. The formation of the Fe3O4 nanoparticles was manipulated by NaOH and NH3 synthesis to optimize the first part of the catalyst formation. Then Pd nanoparticles were formed, generating the active material for the Suzuki coupling. The nanoparticle synthesis of this experiment results in a pseudo-homogenous product which will help in the achievement of a recyclable catalyst.
