Study into the use of antioxidants to quench harmful Reactive Oxygenated Species (ROS) is a burgeoning field of interest. The design of the natural antioxidant apocynin can be improved and made selective for the hydroxyl radical, the ROS species most connected to oxidative cellular damage and a precursor to many pathologies. The  self-cyclizing antioxidant, selective for the hydroxyl radical, was tested for efficiency using a pUC19 plasmid nicking assay. Three structural derivatives of the principle antioxidant were also tested by these methods to determine if the changes had any significant effect upon the efficacy of the molecule. The plasmid nicking assay supported the principle antioxidant’s ability to specifically quench hydroxyl radical, toxic ROS, over other species. This finding paves the way for future work implementing the antioxidant inside the cell and eventual clinical use.
