A course-based undergraduate research experience (CURE) was implemented as a special section of Organic Chemistry II laboratory at Campbell University. Students in the new section made progress on 3 organic synthesis methodology/optimization projects in place of 11 classic “cookbook” experiments usually performed in the regular organic laboratory sections. The course was offered as an opportunity for students to receive earlier and more accessible exposure to a variety of research skills including literature searching and reading, data analysis, experimental design, accurate record-keeping, communication of experimental results, and working within a research team. The course schedule was flexible with a scaffolded approach in project design that allowed students to engage in each step of the research process. Student impressions were favorable, and the course produced several unforeseen benefits both to the students and department. Course design, implementation, student impressions, and extracurricular benefits will be discussed.
