Reactive metal–ligand (M–L) multiply bonded intermediates are critical in both synthetic and biological redox catalysis. Molecular M–L multiply bonded complexes that are sufficiently reactive to functionalize C–H bonds are challenging to structurally characterize because oxidative decomposition pathways are facile. Similarly, facile intramoleular oxidative decomposition pathways renders harnessing the reactivity of M–L multiply bonded complexes for intermolecular group transfer chemistry a challenge. Here, we present our efforts to utilize lattice-confinement both to directly characterize reactive M–L multiply bonded complexes and to utilize those structures for synthetically valuable intermolecular C–H functionalization chemistry.<br/>
