Highly absorbing ruthenium polyazine complexes are of considerable interest to different areas of study including photodynamic therapy, DNA binding, CO2 sequestration and artificial water splitting. Monometallic ruthenium complexes with a bridging ligand may be utilized as subunits covalently linked to form larger supramolecular complexes. Our research work has focused on the design, synthesis and characterization of new highly absorbing ruthenium based sub units that may serve as frameworks for larger assemblies. We report the synthesis, purification and characterization of a set of complexes [Ru(dpop’)(NN)L](PF6)1,2 complexes with L = H2O , Cl- and NN = 2,3-di(2-pyridyl)pyrazine(dpp) and 3,6-di(2-pyridyl)tetrazine(dpt).

Novel aqua and chloro Ru(II) complexes with the tripodal NNN-ligand dipyrido(2,3-a:3',2'-j)phenazine (dpop’) and bidentate NN ligands 2,3-di(2-pyridyl)pyrazine(dpp) and 3,6-di(2-pyridyl)tetrazine(dpt) were prepared and characterized.
