The chemistry of rhenium (Re) has previously allowed for the discovery of multiple, fundamental organometallic reactions. Recently, we have reported the synthesis of pincer-supported (PCP)Re, accessed via C-H activation at high-valent, Re(V) precursors. This presentation will show, for the first time, the ability of a (PCP)Re fragment to undergo facile, Milstein-type dearomatization at an unfunctionalized PCP-pincer furnishing a novel pseudo-carbene. This phenomenon was studied structurally, spectroscopically, and theoretically and its reactivity will be discussed in the activation of various small molecules.
