Molybdate, vanadate, and tungstate based catalysts: [Mo2O11 ]2-, [V(VW11)O40]4-, [WO4]2-, and [H2PMo10V2O40]3-, were synthesized as tetrabutylammonium salts and characterized by infrared spectroscopy. These various polyoxometalates were used in the oxidative desulfurization (ODS) of model refractory sulfides, namely dibenzothiophene (DBT). Utilizing tert-butyl hydrogen peroxide (TBHP) as an oxididant, ODS was accomplished via these catalysts. TBHP is preferable to hydrogen peroxide, as the TBHP does not introduce water into the hydrophobic model oil during ODS. After the removal of dibenzyl sulfoxide and dibenzyl sulfone (DBTO and DBTO2, respectively), the percent DBT remaining was recorded over time via gas chromatography. The rate of sulfide removal between the catalysts was compared, and the most effective catalyst was found to be [Mo2O11 ]2-. Other refractory sulfides, such as benzothiophene, were removed from model oil via ODS with [Mo2O11 ]2-.
