Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) offer highly customizable materials, that can be manipulated for target-specific applications. Recent advancements of water stable MOFs broadens the versatility of these highly tunable and porous systems. The application of MOFs for gas separations and storage has shown promising results. Liquid phase extractions with these materials, however, has yet to be thoroughly explored. It has been shown that minor changes to the pore environment, electronics, and coordination site accessibility can influence the interaction of various gases with the MOF itself. This can lead to selective gas uptake and storage. We hypothesize these types of modifications may also influence the efficiency of MOFs to bind other target hosts as well. For example, porphyrin-based MOFs contain an open coordination environment at the porphyrin center that can be metallated. We hypothesize that changing the coordination sites of the MOF ligand may lead to changes in metal ion interactions. A better understanding of these interactions, would enable systematic design of MOFs for selective metal binding. Towards this effort, we synthesized and analyzed three different porphyrin-based MOFs including a novel framework. All the MOFs used herein are water-stable, an ideal characteristic for potential metal ion uptake in aqueous environments.
