Cardiovascular disease (CVD) prevalence is on the decline, but it remains one of the leading causes of mortality. It is necessary to develop facile and robust methods to analyze CVD risk factors. We present a novel fluorescence quantitation of human serum lipoproteins (HDL, LDL, VLDL, and chylomicrons) through a modified anion-exchange high performance liquid chromatography separation. We utilize a fluorescent lipid probe to tag the lipoproteins and subsequently separate them through the anion-exchange HPLC separation. Currently, we are optimizing the new method and performing secondary assays to validate the protocol. Our fluorescence quantitation through HPLC is novel and may have clinical utility for measuring potential CVD risk factors to aid in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of CVD incidence.
