Ionic liquids (ILs) have become an increasingly important area of research due to their unique array of physical and chemical properties. Recently, our group has demonstrated that perarylated cations – especially tetraaryphosphonium cations – are considerably more stable thermally than more widely used cations types. In order to better understand the structural and chemical bases for the higher thermal stabilities of the foregoing perarylated IL types, we have been engaged in preparing derivatives of the parent tetraphenylphosphonium cation in order to elicited structure-somposition-stability relationships. To that end, we have now synthesized phosphonium ionic liquids containing different halobenzene moieties attached to the basic phosphonium cation core.  Our goal in doing so was to determine the effect (if any) that each arene-bonded halogen (F, Cl, Br, I) has on the thermal stability of the product IL and whether or not the position at which the halogen is placed can increase or decrease thermal stability. Once the synthesis was completed each IL was thermally stressed in a muffle furnace, in air,  at 300 <sup>o</sup>C for three months.  Several of the new salts proved to be remarkably stable under these challenging conditions, allowing us to conclude that their further development is merited for practical application in chores such as thermal heat transfer and storage. <br/>
