Human endogenous retrovirus K (HERV-K) is a sequence present in the modern human genome that is derived from ancient retroviral infections of the germline. Human endogenous retroviral sequences have recently been linked to multiple neurological diseases, such as multiple sclerosis, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, schizophrenia, and various types of cancer. The HERV-K mRNA contains a target element, K-RRE that allows for the export of the retroviral RNA when in the presence of the K-Rev protein, which is an export factor that is coded by HERV-K. The K-Rev and K-RRE are functional equivalents of the H-Rev and H-RRE of the human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1).  In this project, we will report a structural characterization of the K-RRE RNA and compare it to the H-RRE RNA.<br/>
