Semicarbazones and thiosemicarbazones are classes of compounds with known antimicrobial, antifungal, antiviral, and anticancer potential due to their metal-chelating ability. Phenylsemicarbazones (PSCs) and phenylthiosemicarbazones (PTSCs), with an additional hydrophobic phenyl group, are analogues of these compounds that could have improved biological activity due to their enhanced lipophilicity. Our group recently developed a green synthesis of thiosemicarbazones (TSCs). Here, we present our progress in green methods of PSC and PTSC synthesis based on our earlier TSC synthesis that we hope will develop into a sophomore organic chemistry laboratory experiment, though it is in its early stages. We will present the characterization of our products by common organic analytical methods, including proton, carbon-13, and DEPT-135 NMR, and qNMR to evaluate the effectiveness of the green methods tried.
