At Kenyon college, we have seen an increase in science-interested students from groups that are traditionally underrepresented in the STEM fields over the past decade.  We are therefore working towards improving retention of the diverse body of students coming through our curriculum. Innovations in the organic chemistry laboratory are particularly challenging due to the desire and demand to cover traditionally covered topics and student readiness. Most recently we have developed and successfully implemented a course based undergraduate research in our organic chemistry laboratory. We have now completed two iterations over the past two years that balances the need to cover traditional contents with innovations in the curriculum. We will share the lessons learned and strategies on how to effectively develop and implement a course based undergraduate research program in the organic chemistry laboratories. We believe that our approach of teaching organic chemistry labs might help all students, including those from disadvantaged backgrounds.<br/>
