Reactions to exchange or modify the coordination environment of metal ions in 1D coordination polymers have been studied. Our work has been successful in exchanging water ligands for other small ligands such as ammonia or pyridine on existing 1D coordination polymers. We have recently focused on two methods for modifying the coordination environment. This first has been to utilize well-known coordination compounds, such as [Cu(NH3)4]+2 and [Co(NH3)6]+2, as pre-cursors to 1D chains. The other has been to ion-exchange the counterions (SO4-2, NO3-) for bridging ionic ligands (SCN-, CN-). Preliminary data shows that both of these methods are successful in modifying the metal centers of 1D coordination polymers. We have characterized these materials by PXRD, FTIR, TGA, and DR-Vis.
