Hydride transfer underpins catalytic transformations from organometallic synthesis to energy conversion. Thermodynamic hydricity is a measure of hydride donor ability that holds promise as a mechanistic tool for understanding and predicting catalyst performance. To explore the relationship between thermodynamic hydricity and the kinetics of catalysis across different reaction media, a general method for determining hydricity in water has been developed. The resulting expansion in aqueous hydricity values provides new insight into hydride transfer reactions in water. Trends in hydricity as a function of solvent will also be discussed in the context of experimental and computational studies guiding catalyst design.
