Tetrapeptides of the form XxxYyyGlyGly (Xxx = His, Lys, Arg; Yyy = Pro and other amino acids) are incubated in ethanol. Dissociation of the Yyy−Gly bond is monitored over time by periodic injection of aliquots into an ion trap mass spectrometer with electrospray ionization. Measurement of dissociation rates for these processes at multiple temperatures allows determination of activation parameters ΔH‡, ΔS‡, and ΔG‡, which are examined in light of Xxx and Yyy identities.
