Hazard identification, dose-response characterization and exposure potential are the underpinning of product safety assessments.   These basic principles help regulatory agencies, manufacturers and formulators determine the conditions of safe use for chemicals, raw materials and products for a given application to reduce adverse impacts to human health and the environment.  Today, as a part of the growing interest in Green Chemistry, the pendulum is shifting.  Large numbers of companies are incorporating principles of green chemistry to reduce impacts of chemical products and chemical processes as part their design criteria.   Reducing intrinsic hazards early was historically difficult. Today, chemical safety assessment is in the midst of a major transition from animal-based methods that are slow, expensive and suffer from low-throughput, to more modern approaches utilizing cell cultures, genomics and computational biology to achieve greater speed and throughput, lower cost, and ultimately, more accurate predictions of safety for humans and the environment.   The principles and application of green chemistry in the design of new chemicals and products, can assist molecular designers in reducing the intrinsic hazards of their molecules using these new predictive toxicology tools.  This presentation will give awareness of the tools and programs immediately available for use and how to access them as well as an appreciation for some of the practical challenges associated with implementing principles of green chemistry into product development and assessments of safer alternatives.
