Lanthanide (Ln) metals have many uses in modern technology such as electronics, biosensors, magnets and optical materials. Due to the importance of Lns in modern devices, Ln chemistry has become a growing body of research with an increasing focus on Ln extraction both from raw sources and in recycling from consumer products. Our group is currently investigating lanthanide luminescence in solution utilizing carbamoylmethylphosphine oxide (CMPO) chelators. Such studies are designed to increase our understanding of the solution chemistry of these systems while also probing the fundamental photophysics of novel Ln complexes. In this work, we investigated a derivatives of the CMPO ligands we routinely study including the phenacyldiphenylphosphine oxide (Ph) chelator (Ph-CMPO). This presentation will address the ability of Ph-CMPO to sensitize Ln(III) luminescence via the antenna effect. Various Ln(III) complexes of Ph-CMPO were assessed using quantum yield and luminescence decay lifetime measurements. The quantum yield measurements were obtained versus quinine sulfate as the reference fluorophore. Ln complexes for other CMPO-based ligands where the chelating groups are tethered to a tripodal capping scaffold were also explored, and the resultant photophysical properties will be discussed.
