Plant, soil, and mine tailings samples were collected around the abandoned Silver Moon Mine in Branson Creek, Missouri. The plant samples were dried, ashed, and digested in 6 M nitric acid, filtered, and diluted to 25 mL with DI water. The soil and mine tailings samples were dried and digested using aqua regia heated in a Kjeldahl apparatus for 4 hours, diluted to 100 mL, and filtered. All samples were analyzed using an AAnalyst100 PerkinElmer Atomic Absorption (AA) spectrometer with an air-acetylene, oxidizing flame at a wavelength of 283.3 nm and a slit height of 0.7 nm for lead absorbance and a wavelength of 213.9 and a slit height of 0.7 nm for zinc absorbance. Preliminary research shows a significant amount of zinc, and undetectable amounts of lead. Further research is being done to determine the validity of these results.
